After opening on October, 15, 2020, the new Saracen Casino is showing successful numbers. Even with the COVID-19 limitations on capacity, the customer traffic has been strong over the last two months. Revenues have been positive.
Carlton Saffa, chief marketing officer for the casino, put it this way:
’What I am proud of is really pretty simple. When the project was proposed, many people that we have a lot of respect for said it was not going to work in Pine Bluff. And they’re eating crow right now. This has been a success. We have proven the naysayers wrong.’

Last thursday the Saracen Casino officially opened its new permanent gaming facility featuring 2,000 slot machines, 35 table games and several restaurants. Construction on the casino began in August 2019, and atemporary casino, the Saracen Casino Annex, opened in October 2019. An event center and a hotel are planned for 2021.

Saracen Casino is implementing several health and safety procedures to protect against the COVID-19 pandemic. Masks must be worn by all employees and guests and social distancing is enforced at the gaming tables and in the restaurants.

Saracen Casino Resort will hire 800 new workers in the next few weeks as the new Pine Bluff casino prepares to open. The grand opening date has not been announced, however it is expected in early October.
Most of the 800 new hires will receive one to two weeks of paid training prior to the opening. Nearly 400 of the new jobs will be in the food and beverage department supporting six restaurants and the lounge bars. Other jobs are available throughout the property in areas of administration, IT, janitorial, grounds keeping, parking and security.
The total employment at the Saracen Casino will be 1,200.

Construction of the Saracen Casino’s 80,000-square-foot gaming floor and restaurants is preceding 24/7 towards a completion date of June 26. John Berrey, chairman of the Quapaw Nation, hopes that date is earlier. He said, ’My goal is sometime in May to have a soft opening.’
The current construction is the first phase of the $350 million casino resort project. Phase 2 will add a hotel and events center sometime next year. The completed casino resort will total 540,000 square feet.
The new casino will open with 2,000 slot machines, 30-35 table games and seven restaurants around the perimeter. The restaurants will include the Red Oak Steakhouse, Legends Sports Bar, a buffet, three fast food venues and a coffee shop.

The Quapaw Nation of Oklahoma will celebrate the groundbreaking for the Saracen Casino Resort at 11 AM Monday August 5th. The event will be held at 3512 Market St. in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The Arkansas Racing Commission approved the casino license June 13, 2019 to build this casino in Jefferson County. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2020.
The casino will have a 80,000-square-foot gaming floor with 2,000 slot machines and 35 table games.
The hotel will offer 300 guest rooms and suites including a spa, restaurants and lounges. There will also be an entertainment venue, conference center, a museum and cultural center.
The total project will be 570,000 square feet built on a 110 acre site.
As part of the cermony August 5, the Quapaw Nation will also celebrate a ribbon-cutting for their new Saracen Annex Q-Store, a convenience store across the street from the casino site. The store is 20,000-square-feet with 300 gaming machines.
The Saracen Casino will be the third owned by the Quapaw Nation. The tribe also owns the Quapaw Downstream Casino Resort in Quapaw, OK and the Quapaw Casino in Miami, OK.

Yesterday the Arkansas Racing Commission unanimously approved the casino application submitted by the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma to build the Saracen Casino Resort in Jefferson County at Pine Bluff. The $350 million casino resort is supported by both city and county officials.
Quapaw’s Downstream Development Authority will develop the project and manage the operation. The Saracen Casino Resort will be modeled after Downstream Casino Resort in Quapaw, Oklahoma. A major difference is the Saracen Casino Resort will not be an Indian gaming casino regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commissions. Instead it will be a commercial casino licensed and regulated by the Arkansas Racing Commission.
Construction is expected to take 11 months and employ 1,000 workers. A grand opening is expected in the first half of 2020.
The Quapaw Tribe was the sole bidder for the Jefferson County casino license. This is the third casino authorized in the state. The first two licensees were Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort and Southland Casino Racing. Both began operations April 1, 2019.
The fourth and final license will be issued for a Pope County casino. Five applicants submitted proposals to the Arkansas Racing Commission prior to the May 31 deadline. All five applications have been declined. The rejected applicants were:

The Quapaw Nation delivered an official application and a $250,000 check to the Arkansas Racing Commission office today. It was the opening day for applicants to apply for the two available licenses in Pope and Jefferson counties. Applications can be submitted through May 30.
The Quapaw Nation plan to build a 240 million casino named Saracen Casino Resort. It will be located in Jefferson County near The Pines mall in Pine Bluff.
Construction of Saracen Casino Resort would start immediately upon approval of the application. It will take about twelve months to complete the casino and restaurants and another six months to complete the hotel and convention center

If approved by the Arkansas Racing Commission, the Quapaw Tribe intends to break ground on its Saracen Casino Resort immediately after issuanace of a gaming license.
John Berrey, a Quapaw Tribe chief and project chairman, described the casino as being in the programming phase. The $320 million financial target to build the project is based on $100 million for construction materials, $120 million for the cost of construction and $100 million to furnish and equip the facilities.
’Programming is a big word for taking all the stuff we want and jamming it into a building that looks good and figuring out how much it cost, because I have to borrow this money,’ John Berrey said. ’Twelve years ago, you (could) get 10 times your income, but now it’s three or four times, so I’m limited by our feasibility study to what I can borrow. We’ve been working for the last two weeks, and we want a lot of stuff, but we don’t want to pay a whole lot for it.’
Berrey believes construction can be completed on a similar schedule as the Downstream Casino and Resort in Oklahoma, an earlier project he managed. If so, it will take ten months to construct the outside of the Saracen Casino Resort, and complet the restaurants and gaming areas. Construction of the hotel will take another six months.
Berrey said, ’We’ll build the structure, put the skin on it .. we’ll focus on opening the casino so I can start generating income to help pay for finishing up the hotel and convention space. So, let’s say we get our license mid-April, I’m thinking I’d like to see it open by Valentine’s Day 2020.’ Casino movie death scene.

This is a summary of the key progress made since the Nov 2018 election which allowed a casino to be built in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

The Pine Bluff casino plan was submitted by the Downstream Development Authority of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma. This is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Quapaw that has owned and operated the Downstream Casino Resort in Quapaw, OK since 2008.

The Pine Bluff casino will be named Saracen Casino Resort in honor of Chief Saracen, a Quapaw leader who was buried in Pine Bluff in the mid-1830s.
*
Downstream Development Authority was selected by leaders in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County to build and operate the casino in Pine Bluff.

The casino site is located at the intersection of US Hwy 63/79 and the Martha Mitchell Expressway. This is across from the Pines Mall and the Social Security Administration.
*
Construction plans are in place and ready to break ground as soon as the casino license is issued by the State Racing Commission. This could be as early as April of May.

Construction will take 10 months and cost $210 to $240 million dollars.

An estimated 1,000 temporary workers will be needed for construction and 1,000 to 1,100 workers will be permanently employed by the casino.

The grand opening is targeted for Valentine’s Day 2020.

The proposed Saracen Casino Resort has received letters of support from city and county government leaders. The letters were sent to the Downstream Development Authority. The group is part of the Oklahoma based Quapaw Nation.
The tribe owns the Downstream Casino Resort and the Quapaw Casino.
On Wednesday the Racing Commission will meet to discuss the proposed casino.
If approval is given, the Saracen Casino Resort could open by the end of next year.
Voters approved a constitutional amendment that would expand gaming on November 6 of this year. This was Issue Four on the ballot.
Downstream Development Authority contributed $3.65 million to the campaign to pass the expanded gaming measure.

By the end of April, a permit could be granted for a casino in Pine Bluff. By June ground could be broken. The casino could be opened by the beginning of 2020. The casino would be owned by the Quapaw Tribe from Oklahoma.
If approved the casino would offer a range of gambling including sports betting.
The tribe was a major supporter of the expanded gaming law, Issue 4.
Officials for Pine Bluff have worked with the tribe for 5 years in effort to develop a casino there. The exact location for the casino has not been released. However, it could be on the city’s southwest side.
The Quapaw have a historical connection to Pine Bluff as their ancestral homeland.

In the United States, real income over the past 40 years has risen for all income levels to the point where a middle-class income in 1980 could qualify as lower middle today, and an upper-middle-class income in 1980 would qualify as middle class today. Life expectancy has increased nearly eight years since 1970.
Ocasio-Cortez refuses to acknowledge that in a free society, individuals become wealthy by meeting customer needs. Wealth and economic output expands—or shrinks—based on a combination of human ingenuity, labor, natural resources, and capital investment. Few wealthy people get that way from plundering others. They create wealth by bringing to market products that benefit others.
Consider an apple orchard. Apple trees are the capital asset; apples the product. Forcing an orchard owner to convert some of the trees to firewood would deplete the supply of capital (apple trees) and diminish future economic output (apples). Confiscating the net income of the orchard owner would leave less capital to expand for the owner and less growth for the economy.
Income taxes or the wealth taxes proposed by Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives yield the same results across an entire economy—less economic output and lower future growth.
Jeff Bezos—the world’s wealthiest man at $131 billion—transformed commerce through Amazon. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Larry Page revolutionized information technology. The Walton family re-engineered retail through Walmart, expanding consumer choice, driving down costs, and creating hundreds of thousands of jobs.
In prior generations, businesspeople and inventors such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison earned fortunes by improving the lives of others, but those fortunes reflect only a small fraction of the value added to society by their innovation. To punish such success is to incentivize consuming wealth rather than investing and growing and to deter other entrepreneurs from even trying to start businesses.
Capital represents far more than cash locked away in a Scrooge McDuck vault. Instead, capital means factories, manufacturing, equipment, and intellectual property yielding output and creating wealth.
Capital confiscated through taxation means less capital to replace obsolete or deteriorated equipment, fewer resources for research and development, and diminished funds for business expansion.
This is akin to dismantling productive machinery and redistributing the pieces as scrap metal. Although the wealthy are immediately affected, this confiscation reduces the quality of life for all income levels over the longer term.

Furthermore, tax hikes on the wealthy alone—or even on the upper-middle class—simply cannot adequately fund the massive government spending programs (ranging from $48 trillion to $92 trillion over 10 years) promoted by the left recently. Ms Ocasio Cortez
The government could confiscate every dollar earned (starting with dollar No. 1) by those with incomes of $200,000 or above and every penny of corporate profits and still raise only $32 trillion. And that presumes people and corporations would continue normal operations despite all their income being taxed away.
A European-style cradle-to-grave welfare state requires European levels of taxation—and the sluggish economic growth that accompanies it.
What does this look like? Payroll taxes in parts of Europe exceed 50%. A “value-added tax” of more than 20% hurts consumers, rich and poor. A middle-class worker earning $40,000 a year in Europe pays $6,000 more in taxes than the typical U.S. worker. Those earning $100,000 pay $16,000 more in taxes annually.
It’s no surprise that the average family disposable income in Germany is $11,000 less than in the United States.
In reality, the desire for power—rather than economic betterment—fuels the war on wealth.

Tom Alberg is Managing Director and co-founder of Madrona Venture Group. He is active on several portfolio company boards and has also served on the boards of numerous public and private companies. Tom is a director of Amazon, where he has served since before it went public in 1997. Tom serves on the technology industry boards TechNet Northwest and the Washington State Technology Alliance. He was formerly a member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is also on the Investment Committee of the Seattle Foundation and the Puget Sound Business Journal has ranked him number 12 of the 35 most influential business leaders in the Seattle area.
Bryan Mistele is the co-founder, President & CEO of INRIX, a leading provider of real-time transportation information, connected car services and analytics worldwide. INRIX is at the forefront of connecting cars to smarter cities in more than 60 countries around the world. The company leverages big data analytics to reduce the individual, economic and environmental toll of traffic congestion. Bryan has served as a member of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s National Transportation Policy Project, as a member of the United States Department of Transportation’s ITS Advisory Committee, and as a board member of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. He currently serves on the board of the Discovery Institute, a leading think-tank in the Pacific Northwest. Bryan received my Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan (go Blue!) and an MBA from Harvard. Bryan previously worked for Ford Motor Company and Microsoft prior to starting INRIX.
Bruce Agnew is the Director of the ACES Northwest Network. As the Executive Director of the Cascadia Center, Mr. Agnew has helped transform mobility in Puget Sound while protecting the environment. He brings his extensive policy experience to the Network and has demonstrated leadership with the Beyond Oil conference series.
Scott O. Kuznicki, P.E., is the volunteer Programs Director for the ACES Northwest Network. Mr. Kuznicki is leads strategy and mobility technology integration at an executive level, drawing on deep experience as a transportation operations safety engineer working in human factors and technology. He is leading global efforts to improve the integration of transportation infrastructure, users, and energy systems with new technologies. Cass Cave is a cave located in Cass, West Virginia,[1] on Cheat Mountain. On March 16, 1968, 8 people were trapped and later rescued in the cave.[2][3] In 1976, an amateur caver was trapped in the cave for more than 15 hours, falling 40 feet to the cave floor after an equipment malfunction.[4]In 1977, a climber was trapped in the waterfall and died of hypothermia due to being drenched by falling water.[5]
Cass Cave has the highest subterranean waterfall in West Virginia and Virginia, Lacy Suicide Falls, with a height of 139 ft. This high waterfall was misnamed; a suicide did occur but it was at a small drop very near the entrance. The cave is not open to the general public.[6]

The June 1964 Issue of National Geographic featured a two-page fold-out color photograph by Huntley Ingalls of a caver climbing a wire ladder adjacent to the waterfall.[8] The photo was illuminated by a series of #2 Press photo flashbulbs laid over an aluminum foil reflector spread on the slope below.. One of the more memorable scenes in the 1995 movie Casino depicted the character based on Tony Spilotro (played by actor Joe Pesci) and his brother being beaten to death in a cornfield.
The actual killings of Tony and Michael took place in June 1986. After their bodies were found in an Indiana cornfield, there was some speculation that the two had been buried while still alive.
However, testimony given by various witnesses in the Operation Family Secrets trial in Chicago – including a forensic pathologist and a former Outfit hit man – show that the real murders didn’t occur exactly as shown on the big screen.

A forensic pathologist who took part in the autopsies of mobsters Anthony and Michael Spilotro gave testimony on Wednesday that upended the Hollywood version of their deaths, which had the men beaten to death with bats and buried alive in an Indiana cornfield.
Dr. John Pless said at the Family Secrets trial that there was no evidence that the men had been buried alive. The grisly detail was popularized in the 1995 mob movie, “Casino.”
Pless said the injuries the men received were more likely from fists than bats.
Pless riveted jurors with a detailed list of the injuries both men received.
The Spilotros both died from multiple blunt trauma injuries and from having their lungs or airways so filled with blood from their wounds that they couldn’t breathe, according to Pless’ testimony.
The men had been lured to the basement of a Bensenville area home in June 1986 after a mob hit squad had unsuccessfully tried to kill Anthony Spilotro in Las Vegas, according to earlier trial testimony.
Spilotro had tried to blow up a mob associate without Outfit permission, had slept with that associate’s wife and had committed unauthorized murders, according to evidence at trial.
Mob officials lured the men to the basement on the promise that Tony Spilotro was to be promoted to a capo position in the mob, and Michael Spilotro was to be a “made” member of the Outfit.
Instead, a dozen killers were waiting for the men in the basement and jumped them as they came down.
Earlier in the trial, Outfit killer Nicholas Calabrese, who is testifying for the government, described his own role in the murders.
Calabrese testified he held Michael Spilotro while another man strangled him. Calabrese said he did not get a good look at how Anthony Spilotro was killed.
The forensic pathologist testified that he found abrasions around the neck of Michael Spilotro that could have come from a rope, but noted that the corpses had decomposed after being buried for at least a week in the cornfield, and it was difficult to find markings.
The attorney for reputed mob boss James Marcello jumped on the lack of clear strangulation marks.
Defense lawyer Thomas Breen hammered home that point to the jury and will likely use it to bolster his argument that Nicholas Calabrese wasn’t even at the Spilotro murders and made up his account of them.
Calabrese’s testimony is important to Marcello because Calabrese contends Marcello took part in the murders by driving him and other killers to the Bensenville area home.

The 21st film in the Bond series, considered a reboot of the series-franchise, was also the first Bond film featuring blonde Daniel Craig as the 007 agent.
Bond’s partner, blackmailed HM Treasury Financial Action Task Force agent Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) was thought to have betrayed her fellow agent James Bond (Daniel Craig), although it was later revealed that she was attempting to save Bond’s life and the life of her French Algerian boyfriend.
She had withdrawn winning poker funds from a Venice bank located at St. Mark’s Square. Bond trailed her through the streets of Venice, and saw her meet up with bad-guy Gettler (Richard Sammel) and another man in a courtyard and hand over the funds. When Bond showed himself, the three fled (Vesper was taken as hostage) as two other men with machine-guns opened fire. Vesper was in a locked cage-elevator in the building when Bond fired on large floating pontoons to flood the lower part of the building and to escape the gunfire.
The building began to crumble and sink into the canal as the firefight progressed. Bond attacked and sent one of the two goons into the flooding water, as Gettler vainly reached for the briefcase which fell off a ledge into the cascading water, and then accidentally wounded his own man (battling with Bond) before the collapsing elevator crushed him. The second goon fell into the water and drowned. The third henchmen struggled against Bond, and was electrocuted with a live electric cable to the heart. Gettler was killed when Bond shot him in the right eye with a nail gun.
As Bond tried to save Vesper, she apologized, and willingly locked herself in the iron cage, just before it plunged into the water below the disintegrating building. She knew that her betrayal and treachery couldn’t be excused, and she kissed Bond’s hand to remove the guilt associated with her inevitable death.
He couldn’t save her life as she was trapped and drowned in the long, drawn-out and tearjerking scene. Although he eventually freed her from a watery grave and took her to the surface (atop the collapsed building) and administered CPR, it was too late. Mr. White watched the tragic death from afar, and then walked off with the briefcase containing $120 million.
During a debriefing with M (Judi Dench), Bond learned what had led to Vesper’s ’betrayal’:
She had a boyfriend, a French Algerian. They were very much in love. He was kidnapped by the organization behind Le Chiffre. And they blackmailed her, threatening to kill him unless she cooperated.Best Scenes From Casino
Bond bitterly and coldly reflected back about Vesper’s manipulative treason: ’The job’s done and the bitch is dead,’ before discovering Vesper had actually tried to save him. And she had left him a clue in a text message on her cell phone. Movie Casino Scenes On Youtube
M hypothesized that Vesper had also made a deal to spare Bond’s life in exchange for the money. He learned the identity of her blackmailer in a cellphone text message that she had left for him (’For James, Mr. White’) with White’s phone number (# 3926222431), and realized that she didn’t betray him. She had actually revealed the identity of the treacherous mastermind (behind the plot to fund terrorism).

John Tibbets Slocomb (JT) was an important manufacturer of micrometers. He began his career at the Bangor Foundry and Machine Company in 1881, then the Brainerd Milling Machine Company in 1885. Another employee had made a micrometer which other workers were borrowing. The utility of the device didn’t go unnoticed.JT worked for other machine shops including the HB Smith Machine Company, Holyoke Machine Company, Brown & Sharpe, and the Rhode Island Locomotive Works. While working at Brown & Sharpe, from 1887 to 1889, he met CE Barlow. The two formed a partnership known as JT Slocomb & Company in 1891.Slow work during the panic years of 1890 to 1893 allowed time for JT to work on his micrometer. At the time, precision instruments were generally a work of art and expensive. Slocomb’s goal was a durable and accurate instrument made available at an acceptable price. He was also responsible for getting machinery manufacturers to standardize adjustments with dials marked in thousandths of an inch. The partners began selling micrometers to the trade in 1893.The company was sold to JH Drury in 1914.
